"The whole place is really based on community," says Maria 01's CEO Sarita Runeberg.

Ms Runeberg believes it will become the biggest start-up campus in Europe following the completion of three new buildings by 2028, adding a 50,000 sqm floor area.

"We wouldn't be a proper start-up hub if we didn't have our own sauna here!" laughs Ms Runeberg.

Tube-shaped and topped with a circle of ruby red jam, this is a Runeberg cake, and it’s eaten to commemorate the birthday of Finland’s national poet, Johan Runeberg, who was born on Feb. 5, 1804.

Thompson insists he doesn't write "to send political or social messages" but like Finland's national poet Johan Runeberg, his books are filled with characters and plots that do just that.
