The rowing will be held in Queensland's Fitzroy River, which is known to host saltwater crocodiles but the government say the waters are safe.

OceanWell Co. plans to anchor about two dozen 40-foot-long devices, called pods, to the seafloor several miles offshore and use them to take in saltwater and pump purified fresh water to shore in a pipeline.

As fresher water doesn't sink as easily, this is expected to slow the circulation and so bring less saltwater northwards from the tropics.

Meanwhile the taste can be "fishy" if the algae is a saltwater variety.

Unfortunately, we haven’t found a way to fill a coliseum with saltwater and bloodthirsty sharks.
