She ended the competition with a total of 37 Olympic and World Championship medals to surpass the previous mark of 33 held by Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo since the 1990s.

Biles now has 34 medals across the world championships and Olympics, making her the most decorated gymnast ever - male or female - at the sport’s two signature events ahead of the retired Vitaly Scherbo.

Also winning six golds were East German swimmer Kristin Otto in 1988 and gymnast Vitaly Scherbo of Belarus in 1992, when he represented the Unified Team that emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Biles needs just four more medals to surpass Vitaly Scherbo's all-time record of 33 Olympic and world medals, while the USA have won team gymnastics gold at the last two Olympic Games.

Biles broke the all-time record at the world gymnastics championships in Stuttgart, Germany, last week when she secured her 25th medal at the event, beating the record for most world medals by men or women, previously set by Belarusian men's gymnast Vitaly Scherbo.
