semiconductor laser

  1. A solid-state laser constructed like a semiconductor diode. At the junction of anode and cathode, electrons and holes come together; when an electron falls into a hole, bandgap radiation is emitted, as in a light emitting diode. Semiconductor lasers are constructed so that the resulting light tends to stimulate other nearby pairs of electrons and holes to undergo the same process, emitting more light.
  2. Also called diode laser laser diode

The other significant achievement is the hybrid system's ability to double the frequency of the light coming from the commercial semiconductor laser -- enabling a shift from the near-infrared spectrum to the visible light spectrum.

From

The light from the semiconductor laser flows through microscopic waveguides into extremely small cavities, where the beam is trapped.

From

"The basic constituents of such links, the optical fiber, semiconductor laser, optical modulator and photoreceiver, all place limits on the bandwidth and the accuracy of data transmission."

From
