Although little known outside Sovietologist circles before he became leader in 1985, he quickly became a dominant and charismatic figure on the world stage.

To George F. Kennan, the distinguished American diplomat and Sovietologist, Mr. Gorbachev was “a miracle,” a man who saw the world as it was, unblinkered by Soviet ideology.

Widely known for “The Great Terror,” a study of Stalin’s 1930s atrocities, this distinguished Sovietologist was equally distinguished as a poet.

She was divorced from Yuri Olkhovsky, a George Washington University Sovietologist and a supporter of Russian dissidents; and the widow of David Chavchavadze, a descendant of the Romanov dynasty, which ruled Imperial Russia for 300 years.

He met Lubin in the 1980s when she was a Sovietologist in the federal Office of Technology Assessment.
