“It’s definitely unfortunate and was a really awful situation,” said Cameron Gregg, a freediver and spearfisherman who has made about 30 trips to the region over the past decade.

Gregg, the spearfisherman, said he has always taken certain precautions and will continue to do so.

Even more impressive is that 26-year-old Hara looks nothing like the typical spearfisherman.

But it is the rare spearfisherman who becomes so captivated by the experience of diving deep along a line that he yearns to compete.

“It’s all about living off the ocean,” said Robert Cooley, a lifelong spearfisherman and the leader of the Gamay Rangers, an Aboriginal group that helps manage and protect Botany Bay on Sydney’s southern edge.
