Some endangered island species today include: the dwarf buffalo Tamaraw on the Philippine island of Mindoro, 21% the size of its closest mainland relative; the spotted deer of the Philippine Visayan islands of Panay and Negros, 26% the size of its closest mainland relative; and Jamaica's hutia, a rodent 4-1/2 times bigger than its closest mainland relative.

The enclosures contain natural prey - such as spotted deer and antelope, which scientists hope they’ll learn to hunt - and are designed to prevent other predators like bears or leopards from getting in.

And wildlife officials have audited the park's prey, ensuring enough spotted deer, blue bulls, wild boars and porcupines to sustain the cheetahs' diet.

State surveys have spotted deer and other mammals already crowding onto canal banks and flood control levees that provide little shelter or forage.

The 205-sqkm Dnyanganga sanctuary is home to leopards, blue bull, wild boar, peafowl and spotted deer.
