The stalagmites examined originate from the Sofular Cave in Turkey, which is located in a region that is very sensitive to climate change.

Interestingly, they found all of this in a very unexpected place: stalagmites, or the tapering columns that grow up from the bottom of caves.

In contrast to tree rings, stalagmites have only been used in exceptional cases to systematically measure climate data and their annual variations.

This information is locked into the stalagmites over time.

All you have to do is journey 170 feet below the surface through a series of limestone caverns filled with stalactites and stalagmites.
