Born Jan 22, 1937, Joseph Aloysius Wambaugh Jr. grew up in East Pittsburgh, Pa., where his father worked in a steel mill and, for a time, was the city’s police chief.

Amy Bocci, the daughter of a steel mill worker, grew up in a firmly Democratic household in the Pittsburgh suburb of Monroeville.

He was playing sandlot games with boys four or five years older when he was 10, and at 14 joined his father’s steel mill team as a pitcher.

Born in 1982 in the industrial town of Braddock, Pa., a short distance from Pittsburgh and the site of Andrew Carnegie’s first steel mill, she picked up a camera in her teens.
