You may have additional debts, such as credit card and store card debts, pay-day loans, buy-now-pay-later payments, overdrafts, unsecured loans and water bills.

The scammer also attempted to sign up to a John Lewis store card.

Michael Ashley Schulman, chief investment officer at Running Point Capital Advisors, said Nordstrom's earnings indicate shoplifting and store card delinquencies are the new surprise warnings management and investors have to contend with.

"It was about credit card, store card, and catalogue debt back then. Now it is about people not being able to afford the essentials. There are debts on council tax, energy and rent which are day-to-day costs you should be able to meet," he said.
