The streetscape was changed in recent years to add a cycle lane as part of a £52,000 scheme involving the city council and DfI.

DfI commissioned consultants to draw up proposals to redevelop the streetscape and resolve the issues.

There were individual buildings here or there but never a complete streetscape that worked.

This all serves New Orleans’ tourism industry, which operates in the shadow of an even darker form of American capitalism—the wealth that built the streetscape in the 19th century derived largely from slavery.

New York has created the position of chief public realm officer to transform the streetscape, supervising permanent “streeteries,” pedestrianized plazas, and more family-friendly spaces to encourage residents to socialize, shop, eat, and exercise in person.
