This rare supernova, called 2023ufx, originated from the core collapse of a red supergiant star, exploded on the outskirts of a nearby dwarf galaxy.

Binary stripped stars have been previously evoked to explain why a third of core-collapse supernovae contain much less hydrogen than a typical explosion of a Red Supergiant star.

While seemingly small, that amount is “more than we would expect from a red supergiant star,” Jacobson-Galán says.

Supernova 2023ixf may give some much-needed answers on the matter, among the other particulars of how a red supergiant star collapses and ultimately explodes.

To be so far away and still appear so bright means that Deneb is a beast: it’s a huge supergiant star that’s easily 100 times the size of the sun and likely twice as big as that estimate.
