The new government and the presidential council will then need to ready the country for the deployment of the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support mission and then appoint a nine-member provisional electoral council to begin working on organizing elections.

Some 1,000 Kenyan police officers are set to arrive soon in Haiti, part of a multilateral security support mission that aims to help quell gang violence.

“The deployment of the multinational security support mission in Haiti is urgent, and we’re doing all we can to advance that goal,” Brian A. Nichols, assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, told reporters last week.
