The dangerous combination of royal power and unruly passions is a theme Shakespeare explored in many plays, and in “The Winter’s Tale” the consequences of Leontes’s jealousy are taken to terrifying extremes as he exacts violent revenge despite his courtiers’ reasoned attempts to dismiss his imagined fears.

In this respect the Alcestis might more truly be compared to such a drama as the Winter’s Tale; the loss and recovery of Hermione by Leontes do not form a tragi-comedy because we are amused between-whiles by Autolycus and the clown.
