The country’s largest toymaker, Mattel, has been boosted by its Hollywood ambitions in recent years, but its biggest theatrical hit, “Barbie,” was based on its iconic line of dolls.

Mattel, the toymaker behind Barbie and Hot Wheels, is laying off 120 workers from its El Segundo headquarters, according to a notice provided to state and local officials.

"It's the first thing we talk about and the last thing we talk about," toymaker Jay Foreman said this weekend from his booth at the trade show, where classic hits such as Lincoln Logs, Tonka Trucks and K'Nex were on display.

The toymaker Lego Group also is based in Denmark.

Last month it launched a Barbie-themed phone in collaboration with toymaker Mattel, and I tried it out.
