Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said it sent five appliances from across Newcastle and crews left the scene just before 04:00.

A group of young train enthusiasts who met by chance on the Tyne and Wear Metro have grown into a club who ride the loop together.

It was so bad that, for a time, Tyne and Wear Metro trains had to stop running underneath it, causing chaos for commuters and Christmas shoppers.

For example, the cost of a single journey on a bus in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, and County Durham will be capped at £2.50 from January.

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We currently have several firefighting appliances in attendance at a large scale incident."
