In the past five years, the federal government has attempted to overhaul the background check process since it was revealed that the last firm in charge, Virginia-based USIS, had failed to complete some 665,000 investigations.

The Obama administration fired USIS, a background-check firm, amid accusations that it failed to complete 665,000 investigations.

Altegrity, the parent company of USIS, filed for bankruptcy in February and federal officials said company officials agreed to forgo their right to collect $30 million in outstanding payments to settle the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, which alleged that his employer, USIS, had “dumped,” or failed to perform, the required reviews in 665,000 investigations, touched off hearings in Congress and accusations that the company had not only defrauded the government but created a threat to national security.
