Senior lecturer in Islamic Studies at South Africa's University of the Western Cape, Dr Fatima Essop, reflected on the "distressing" vitriolic content circulating on social media in the wake of Hendricks' killing.

With her family's support, she returned to complete her degree and later earned an MSc in nuclear physics at the University of the Western Cape, graduating with distinction.

Born in the Western Cape on 16 September 1939, to a family of five, Breytenbach lived much of his life abroad, but always remained true to his South African roots.

He added that elderly people living in care homes had also been brought in for medical care, and Western Cape health staff were offered wellness visits.
