Days later, Xu Jiajin, 21, killed eight people and wounded 17 others in a stabbing spree at his university in the eastern city of Wuxi.

Within days of the Zhuhai and Wuxi attacks, a man drove into a crowd of children and parents outside a primary school in Changde city, injuring 30 of them.

That same week, a 21-year-old who couldn't graduate after failing his exams, went on a stabbing rampage on his campus in Wuxi city, killing eight and injuring 17.

Two cases in point – telecoms firm Huawei and drugs company WuXi Biologics.

Meanwhile, WuXi has, since 2018, invested more than €1bn in a facility in Dundalk, near the border with Northern Ireland.
