A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has injured at least 20 people and seriously damaged multiple buildings in the Ecuadorian port city of Esmeraldas.

Ecuador's national oil company, Petroecuador, said it briefly suspended operations at its refinery in Esmeraldas.

The port city of Guayaquil has been the epicenter of violence, but Esmeraldas, a Pacific coastal city, is also considered one of the country’s most dangerous.

After Mr Villavicencio's death, a local politician was killed in the northern Esmeraldas province and many feared more was to come.

And a local politician was shot dead in northern Esmeraldas province.
