Furfurol in minute quantities can be detected by the red colour it forms with a solution of aniline acetate.

Impure beverages induce all the graver neurotic and visceral disorders in alcoholism; and, like fusel oil, furfurol and the essence of absinthe, are convulsent poisons.

He studied the formation of aldehyde from 351 alcohol by various methods, also obtaining its crystalline compound with ammonia, and he was the discoverer of furfurol.

He also obtained a gummy substance which, on hydrolysis, gave rise to a reducing sugar; and as it gave mucic acid and furfurol on oxidation, he concluded that it was a compound of pentose and galactose.

By distilling coffee with hydrochloric acid Ewell obtained furfurol equivalent to 9 percent pentose.
