GE Healthcare said in a statement on Monday that its supply of iodinated contrast media products was increasing, although it did not provide an estimate for when the shortage would end.

The interaction with organic metals and chlorine results in “disinfection byproducts”—like iodinated trihalomethanes, brominated trihalomethanes and chloroform—which are carcinogenic.

They also checked to see if they were exposed to iodinated contrast media.

“There are medical situations in which the use of iodinated contrast media is necessary and good,” he said.

The Shanghai plant shuttered by the lockdown is operated by GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric and one of two major suppliers of the iodinated contrast materials.
